Michiel van der Zanden
Malerei, Skulptur & Video

Video

Upstairs we introduce to you: Michiel van der Zanden he lives and works in Breda.
In his work he often starts by making a 3D sketch in the computer of a situation from daily life. Later he uses this image as a base for a highly realistic painting in acrylic or oil paint. This approach give his work a special kind of absurdistic feel. You might have seen an example of this in the picture of a caravan in the article in the Landshuter Zeitung.
Since last year van der Zanden has taken a new direction. Now he focuses more on abstract form and subjects, looking into objects or shapes in public space. Everybody will recognize these objects as specially designed or formed like a bench in the park, a chewed out gum or a fountain. Like in the fountain on the video upstairs, which he measured and photographed in detail, and afterwards setup as a 3D model an rendered in minute detail to a surrealistic version of reality.

Nick J. Swarth
Drawings, Objects & Poems

Drawings

Dirt Drawings & Objects

Nick J. Swarth started out as a poet, and he still is. He is also a performer and word artist. Only the last 2 years he added sculpture and drawings to his works.
“Shabby art that falls apart”, its a term he himself invented to discribe his works. A title that also refers directly to the way Swarth makes his art. You will often find him in the city where he collects kinds of stuff thrown away in the streets. These “Found Objects” are the base material for his art. In this way the seemingly worthless material is given a second life in crazy dadaistic collages and sculptures you can see displayed here.
Cohesion is important part of the art of Swarth. A lipstick will become part of a still life, a shoe will become a vase for strange flowers, a spot on some paper is often the start of a dirt drawing as Swarth will call them. You can look at all the works separately, but the artist will always present them in a series or as a part of a well though trough composition.
You can expect of a word artist like Swarth the titles are an important part of the work it self, referring to other art, literature or politics. With his dark and fragile collage work Swarth reflects on western society and the disposable attitude and question the fragility of the system.
Art with an edge is what makes Swarth tick. That is why he is one of the favorite artists of IDFX.
